Ray of hope for Siamese students
SECOND CHANCE: Senator to help top scorers get placement at local institutions
ALOR STAR: HELP is on the way for 37 Siamese students who scored 7As
and above in last year's Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination, but
could not get a place at matriculation centres or public universities
here.
Senator Datuk Boon Som Inong said he brought the plight of the students to the attention of Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also education minister.
Boon, the Siamese community's representative in Dewan Negara, said he would submit the students' appeal letters to Muhyiddin over the next few days.
"I believe the ministry will resolve the matter soon."
The students had expressed their disappointment after their application for places at the local higher learning institutions were rejected.
One student, Litta Chin, 18, who got 9As, said she planned to study medicine at Universiti Malaya.
"I deserve a chance to pursue my dream to become a doctor.
"It is disappointing that I was not given a chance to continue my tertiary studies," said the former student of SMK Seri Manjung, Perak.
