MOUNT SINABUNG: Prepare action plan to deal with ash fall

THE Sinabung volcano in Sumatra has become increasingly active recently, releasing huge amounts of dangerous ash clouds which have resulted in many deaths.
It is possible that the volcanic activity might intensify even further and larger amounts of ash released into the air.

Bearing in mind that Peninsular Malaysia has, in the past, been enveloped by haze blown in from Sumatra, it is very likely that ash from Sinabung can also arrive here if volcanic activity intensifies and winds are easterly.

In the worst case scenario, thick ash fall could close the Malacca Straits to shipping traffic, closing all ports. Air, road and rail traffic will also be affected. The abrasive ash particles can also strip trees bare of leaves causing untold damage to our forests, plantations and food agriculture. There is also the danger of drinking water supply becoming polluted with ash.

In view of the many active volcanoes in Sumatra and the fact that the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia is the most developed part of Malaysia, the government should seriously consider setting up a permanent body to look into the possible implications resulting from volcanic and seismic activities in Sumatra and prepare an action plan to face any eventuality arising from a serious ash fall.
