Study On Tongkat Ali Herbal Crop Technology

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 8 (Bernama) -- The technology to plant tongkat ali (Eurycoma longifolia) as herbal crop will be introduced soon to ensure continuous supply for the herbal industry and to protect the biodiversity of Malaysia.

Biotropics Malaysia Berhad chief operating officer, Tengku Shahrir Tengku Adnan said the technology was still being studied and it needed to be tested carefully to ensure the quality of the herbal crop.

The study on the development of the technology which was being conducted with the cooperation of the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry would take several years more before it could be commercialised, he said when interviewed on Bernama Radio24's "Dalam Radar" programme.

He said the need for th technology was important as tongkat ali was among the most demanded herbs in the country.

"As the supply from natural sources is depleting, there is a need to ensure the continuous supply of the root extracts and the tongkat ali bioactive compound for the herbal, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical industries as well as for the purpose of conservation.

"The production of tongkat ali herb is limited in Malaysia causing us to import from Indonesia as the biological resource could only be found in jungles of the region,' he said.

According to Tengku Shahrir, Malaysia should raise its output of herbs or products based on tongkat ali following high demand from other countries in Europe, which assured lucrative returns to operators and producers of the herb in the country.
