Disabled students prove themselves
DEAF mute Kang Kia Chun from SMK Raja Muda Musa, Teluk Intan, and an Orang Asli, Rozeliana Harun from SMK Slim, Slim River, were among 42 students in the state who did well in last year's Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).
Kang, 19, who communicates by sign language, said he spent three to five hours on his studies daily. He attended special classes at the school.
Accompanied by his parents, Kang Siang Poh, 46, a lorry driver, and Tan Bee Lian, 46, Kia Chun said he would request his teachers to give him more exercises and study work in order to improve his subjects.
Kia Chun, who scored straight As, aspires to be a teacher for the disabled.
Meanwhile, Rozeliana, 18, who aspires to be a pharmacist, said she loved challenges and would always listen to her teachers.
Rozeliana obtained 4A+s, 2As and 3Bs.
In Kota Baru, Ahmad Fajrul Adha Mohamad Kamil, 18, is suffering from an extremely fragile bones (osteogenesis imperfecta) condition since birth but that did not stop him from obtaining good results in the exam.
Despite his physical disability, Ahmad Fajrul Adha , from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Bunut Susu in Pasir Mas, scored 5As, 4Bs dan 1C to emerge as the top disabled student in Kelantan.
"The result is worth the trouble that I have gone through all these years."
The second of three siblings, Ahmad Fajrul Adha said he used an electric wheelchair to travel 2km from his house at Kampung Kubang Bechah to his school. He had to be carried around school by his friends.
"The disability pushed me to work harder." Additional reporting by Mohd Asri Yaacob
