Landslip At Jalan Imbi, Monorail Services Suspended

KUALA LUMPUR, July 2 (Bernama) -- A five metre landslip occurred near a tunnel in Jalan Imbi today due to an underground water pipe burst, prompting the relevant authority to suspend monorail services between Hang Tuah and Bukit Bintang.

Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Operations assistant director Azizan Ismail said no fatalities were reported in the 9.30 am incident but the public are advised not to use the route to avoid traffic congestion.

He said the department had asked for the monorail services between Hang Tuah and Bukit Bintang to be temporarily halted for safety reasons, as one of the monorail columns is near the landslip site.

"We are worried that the landslip would bring down the column and cause the monorail to slump," he told reporters at the scene here Wednesday.

According to him, the 35 metre channel which is under construction would potentially accommodate four vehicle lanes and ease traffic congestion at simpang empat Jalan Imbi by linking with the lanes from Jalan Pudu towards Jalan Tun Hussein.

Azizan said the department had also made markings around the area near the monorail column to monitor the earth movement.

Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Ahmad Phesal Talib told Bernama that construction of the tunnel would resume tomorrow.

He said DBKL was also discussing with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) to ensure that there would not be any short circuit in the surrounding areas particularly the Kuala Lumpur police contingent headquarters, business premises and hotels.

Traffic is expected to crawl due to temporary closure of Jalan Hang Tuah and Jalan Imbi.

According to a DBKL spokesman, the flow has been diverted to Jalan Pudu.
