KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 21 (Bernama) -- The government is looking at
several measures in effort to ensure that the salary rate of the rakyat
is in tandem with the rising cost of living.
Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah said this when asked on the grumblings by the rakyat on the rising cost of living which was viewed to be not in line with their salary.
"The study on this is ongoing and 'InsyaAllah' by January (2014), the results will be out, and from there we will make a decision on which measure to implement," he told reporters after launching a seminar on Wakaf organised by the Malay Chamber of Commerce Malaysia here Saturday.
He said the government is also undertaking a study on the subsidy rationalisation, aimed at maximising the assistance to target groups through subsidy review.
"Next year, we will give BR1M as usual, however we will increase the amount. We are looking at the overall subsidy rationalisation as a new model, and how we want to link BR1M to this to provide higher benefits to the rakyat compared with the present situation.
"We are doing the study which is expected to be ready soon, and we believe in being able to give overall benefits to the rakyat, which will focus more on the needy groups," he said.
Ahmad Husni said the previous model provided overall benefits to the rakyat but was unfair, citing petrol subsidy as an example.
He said based on the old subsidy model, families using motorcycles received very little in petrol subsidy compared with families that own four cars.
"The rich actually do not need the subsidy but becasue of the old system, they also enjoy the benefits.
"So, we are looking at the current model so that we can make a measurement to the target group in the context of giving higher assistance," he said.
Ahmad Husni however reminded that increase in the prices of goods was not only due to the reduction in subsidy alone, but was also due to market forces.
Hence, for the long term, the focus should be on the increase in salary of the rakyat, which is the main objective in the government transformation programme," he said.
