Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also education minister, said he had decided to allow the pupils of SK Bandar Bintangor in Meradong to sit the papers that they had missed.“It is the prerogative of the education minister under the Education Act and I have the power to let anyone in cases like this to take the exam,” he said after a Hari Raya function here yesterday.
He said the Malaysian Examination Council (MEC) had informed him that there would be no problem in setting up a new examination session for the pupils. It was now preparing the exam papers. “Their exam results will be accepted as UPSR results.”
Muhyiddin said he deeply regretted the incident as all pupils, who had registered with MEC to take public examinations, had the right to do so.
“I would like to apologise to the parents of the pupils and I promise that their children will be given the chance to take the exam soon.
“It does not matter whether a pupil is excellent, not excellent or weak, he
or she must be given the chance to sit for the exam.”
Muhyiddin reminded school administrators not to deny pupils their rights to take examinations.
“They may want to get the rewards offered by the Education Ministry under
the New Key Result Area, but they should not resort to stopping pupils, who are deemed weak, from taking examinations.
“Parents also have the right to know their children’s level of achievement in the exams.”
He hoped this was an isolated case and remedial action would be taken.
“We will get a complete report on the incident and if it was found to be intentional, the (state) education director will take appropriate action on
the school administrators based on our code of discipline.”
