300 evacuated as flood worsens in Perlis
KANGAR: More than 300 people from 90 families were evacuated to 10 flood relief centres as of this morning since flood conditions in Perlis worsened due to continuous rain.
A Perlis flood operations room spokesman said the flood victims were evacuated to 10 relief centres, namely five in Padang Besar, three in Kangar and two in Arau.
The spokesman added that flood relief operations were still in progress to ensure those affected are evacuated safely.
Meanwhile, two schools - Sekolah Kebangsaan Padang Melangit and Sekolah Kebangsaan Tengku Budriah - were closed due to floods.
Perlis Drainage and Irrigation Department Director Nishad Mohamed said exceptional heavy rain since yesterday had caused floods but added that floods in Perlis could be reduced by upgrading infrastructure at the Timah Tasoh Dam.
Excess water can be diverted to the sea by building channels to the east and west directions from the dam, he said. -- BERNAMA
