Wee: No issues using forecast results
PETALING JAYA: There is no issue
in using Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) forecast results to decide if
the students meet a private college’s minimum standards for enrolment,
said MCA deputy party president Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong.
He said the students have been allowed to do so for the past three decades and there had been no problems.
“(Enrolment) can be terminated if the actual SPM results do not
match the minimum requirements, so what is the issue?” said Dr Wee.
The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department stressed however
that colleges have to be clear and tell the parents what will happen if
their children’s SPM results do not meet the institution’s minimum
standards for the course they are studying.
“The colleges have to tell the parents before they enrol their
children that if they do not make the grade, they will not be allowed to
continue,” Dr Wee said.
He said using a student’s SPM forecast results to enrol students was
something done by private colleges for the past three decades.
He was commenting on The Star’s report on Sunday that the
ministry had issued a circular in May to notify private institutions of
higher learning that forecast results would no longer be accepted as
admission qualifications for 2015.
Dr Wee pointed out that those who do not want to go on to do their
Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia exam or matriculation could continue
their education without wasting their time if SPM forecast results were
allowed.
On Sunday, Dr Wee said that students would be doing nothing for six
months as they wait for their actual SPM results before knowing if they
can continue with tertiary education plans.
He had said that parents usually registered their children at
private institutions for pre-university or foundation programmes while
waiting for the SPM results to be released.
