CHANGLUN: A welcoming town near the Thai border
When I tried to slot in Changlun as the town where we lived, my Facebook account failed to indicate that it was located in Malaysia.

I discovered that there were at least four districts or places named Changlun in China.
With that information, I assumed Changlun was named by Chinese immigrants to the Malay Peninsula in the late 19th century.

But, the locals said Changlun was a combination of two Thai words -- chang means elephant and loon means falling.

Eight or nine years ago, Changlun was just another dead town that we passed each time we made a trip to Haadyai. We could have stopped here once or twice to exchange currency.

I wanted to find out more about Changlun, so I asked around. The town folk were generous with their stories. Some shared hilarious accounts, while others related dark and creepy tales.

Some 35 years ago, before the Bukit Kayu Hitam Township came into existence, Changlun was the last town on the northern frontier between Malaysia and Thailand. It was bordered by Perlis in the west.

It was a quiet town of rubber plantations with a backdrop of jungles, hills and mountains. There were scattered kampung baru or new villages with rows of old wooden shops and stray dogs, here and there.

In 2009, the population was estimated be around 40,000 people. It has doubled over the past six years partly because of the expansion of Universiti Utara Malaysia's campus which is located 10km east of Changlun.

Many people have moved in because of work opportunities at Universiti Malaysia Perlis, Kolej Matrikulasi Kedah, Politeknik Arau, Perlis and Universiti Teknologi Mara Arau.

I had a scary experience, that gave me goose bumps, when we were just settling down in our humble abode, in the residential area behind the C-Mart Supermarket in December 2012. Yes, it carries local and imported goods just like other stores of its kind in Kuala Lumpur.

I was unpacking boxes by myself in the upstairs bedroom at the back, at a quarter to midnight, when I heard an eerie, sad but melodious voice begin to hum and sing Cantonese oldies.

The songs were full of sorrow, heartache, loneliness and longing for love. I couldn't understand a word, but I know a good voice when I hear one.

It was creepy because the songs reminded me of female vampires in those Chinese movies that I loved to watch in my younger days, and old Shanghai, circa 1920s and 1930s. The next day, after a short walk and an awkward hello, I got to know a neighbour from the back row of the house -- a soft-spoken, somewhat aged, but still beautiful lady who turned out to be a one-time belle of the town of Danok, many, many moons ago.

A friend of my other half, who was a senior lecturer at UUM, once told me in a humorous tone that Changlun was infamous as a Communist hideout from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s.

As a 20-year-old, newly commissioned army officer, he was deployed to Sungai Petani, Kedah, and was immediately sent to the Malaysia-Thailand border area.

"Each time, when we were about to enter Changlun, we would be welcomed by them (the Communists) in a very 'friendly way'.

"We would receive messages in English of 'Welcome to Changlun' through the walkie-talkie. Of course we knew that they wanted us to know they were ready for us. It was quite frightening," he said.

I enjoy living Changlun. It is a small and safe place with enough basic facilities. Of course, sometimes, there are a few hiccups here and there.

We live like other urbanites. We enjoy food at Pizza Hut, KFC, Merry Brown and Secret Recipe, whenever we have extra money to spend.

Luckily, all these food outlets are just a walking distance from our house.
We have our famous Yusof Jan's nasi jagung which is served with more than 10 types of curry. People come from as far away as Kangar and Jitra to enjoy this local fare.Of course, we have the usual Mamak Restaurants as well.

The town is welcoming to outsiders and foreigners. Ten or maybe 15 years ago, only locals were seen here. Now, there are Arabs, Uzbeks and Africans. Most of them are UUM lecturers and postgraduate students. There are also a few Americans who are engaged in volunteer work.

Hundreds of lorries from Cambodia, Laos and, of course, Thailand pass through daily and some of them stop in Changlun before continuing their journeys south.

It may not be such a bad idea to turn Changlun into a rest and recreation hub for these lorry drivers?
Politicians and businessmen should also sit down and come up with practical solutions to ensure the safety of pedestrians and deal with the traffic congestion caused by illegally-parked lorries.

We need more teachers and a larger police force here due to the growing population of both locals and foreigners.

The state government should also do something about the frequent blackouts and low water pressure.

Universiti Utara Malaysia’s campus is located 10km east of Changlun.

Akhlak Nabi Saw

Subhanallah.

Wallahua'lam

Man Slays Daughter, Injures Two Other Daughters
BANGI, Jan 30 (Bernama) -- A seven-year-old girl died after her throat was allegedly slit by her father at their double-storey terrace house in Section 4, Bandar Baru Bangi this afternoon.

Selangor deputy police chief Datuk Abd Rahim Jaafar said in the 4.45 pm incident, the victim's two sisters, aged 10 and 12, were also hacked by their father leaving one injured in the back of the neck and the other with a severed finger.

"Police are still looking for the missing finger in the house," he told reporters at the scene.

He said another of the suspect's daughter, aged 15, and son, aged 17, managed to save themselves from the father, who used a machete in attacking the children.

According to him, the 15-year-old, who had just returned from attending religious classes, was shocked to see her father standing in the living room with a machete in his hand.

"The girl saw blood splattered all over the living room and her sisters injured. She screamed and shouted for her elder brother, aged 17, who was in an upstairs room.

"The brother rushed down and on seeing what had happened told her to run upstairs and lock herself in his room. He then called the police," he said.

Abd Rahim said on arrival, police found the two injured girls in the living room and immediately rushed them to the Kajang Hospital.

He said police found the girl whose throat was slit in a room downstairs.

During the incident the wife was at her workplace in Cyberjaya, he said.

Police then hunted down the 44-year-old man and found him by the bank of a river behind the housing estate at 6pm.

"The suspect was in a disoriented state, wet and with a head injury. Police believe he had jumped into the river but climbed back to the river bank afterwards," he said.

Abd Rahim said police also seized a machete from the suspect.

He added that the suspect who had been jobless for two years, did not have a criminal record and could be suffering mental problems.

Later, a neighbour, who declined to be identified, when interviewed, said the wife was now at the Kajang Hospital.

She said the family was highly respected in the neighbourhood as they always joined congregational prayers at their surau (place for Muslims' congregational prayers in villages and housing schemes).

"They were very strict about the prayers and I have asked the surau members to help clean up the house after the forensics personnel have completed their investigations," she said.

Malaysian student in UK assaulted by juvenile attackers

KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian student was seriously injured after he was assaulted by three teenagers, armed with a pocket knife and a fake pistol, in Nottingham, United Kingdom, on Sunday.

In the 6.50pm (Nottingham's time) incident, Ahmad Izat Ahmad Masni sustained more than 10 stab wounds on his body and thigh and was punched several times.

The 23-year-old student of Nottingham University was on his way to his friend's house in Dunkirk for dinner when he was confronted by the juvenile assailants about hundred metres away from his hostel at the university's Jubilee campus.

A commotion ensued after Ahmad Izat managed to grab one of the robbers during a chase along a lane in the Wollaton Drive Hall where the other accomplice had stabbed him several times before they fled the scene.

The three robbers, believed to be between 10 years old and 14 years old, only managed to escape with Ahmad Izat's watch.

Ahmad Izat, who is a first year student of bachelor's degree in Industrial Economics, was rushed to the Queen's Medical Centre Hospital where he received 11 stitches for his wounds.

He was still traumatised and sought shelter at his friend's house in Dunkirk.

$130 billion a year wasted on poor quality education: UN
A quarter of a billion children worldwide are failing to learn basic reading and maths skills in an education crisis that costs governments $129 billion annually, the UN's cultural agency warned in a report Wednesday.

Inadequate teaching across the world has left a legacy of illiteracy more widespread than previously thought, UNESCO said in its annual monitoring report.

It said one in four young people in poor countries was unable to read a sentence, with the figure rising to 40 percent in sub-Saharan Africa,

The United Nations defines "youth" as people aged between 15 and 24, although UNESCO's definition varies across regions.

"What's the point in an education if children emerge after years in school without the skills they need?" said Pauline Rose, the director of the nearly 500-page Education for All Global Monitoring Report.

In a third of countries analysed, fewer than three-quarters of existing primary school teachers were trained to national standards, while 120 million primary age children across the world had little or no experience of school, the UNESCO report found.

"The cost of 250 million children not learning the basics is equivalent to $129 billion, or 10 percent of global spending on primary education," the report said.

Thirty-seven countries monitored by the report are losing at least half the amount they spend on primary education because children are not learning, UNESCO said.

In developed countries including France, Germany and the United Kingdom, immigrant children lag behind their peers, performing far worse on minimum learning targets.

Indigenous groups in Australia and New Zealand face similar problems, it said.

The report called for global education policies to focus not only on enrolment rates but also on equal access and better teaching.

"Access is not the only crisis -– poor quality is holding back learning even for those who make it to school," UNESCO director general Irina Bokova wrote in the report's foreword.

She said it was clear that the educational targets set in 2000 by the UN's Millennium Developments Goals would not be reached.

Rose said "new goals after 2015 must make sure every child is not only in school, but learning what they need to learn".

Pendakwah Perlu Hikmah

Hafiz Hamidun mengalunkan Astaghfirullah Al 'Azim

mengampunkan kita. Amin.

Perlakuan alam

Laporan  Metereologi

"Jabatan Meteorologi Malaysia (JMM) melaporkan pada hari Khamis bahawa dari 1 hingga 22 Januari, suhu yang paling rendah dicatatkan di Kuantan iaitu 21.0°C, Kota Kinabalu 22.1°C, Petaling Jaya 23.6°C, Kota Bharu 23°C, Kuching 22.0°C manakala daerah di utara seperti Alor Setar, Kedah dan Chuping, Perlis masing-masing mencatatkan suhu 22.4°C dan 23.3°C." Demikian laporan msatr online Khamis 23 Januari,2014. Mudah-mudahan fenomena ini cepat berlalu, InsyaAllah.
